When some of us were children we were given IQ/personality exams. We were shown drawings with ubiquitous subject matter and asked to describe what was happening in the scene. In Gieseke's photos she sets up similarly unsure settings and we are left to fill in the blanks ourselves again. Sometimes I see depressed women, sometimes purely abstract art, sometimes scenes from a fairytale, and sometimes intriguing fetishistic poses. At every viewing I may be seeing what she is showing or simply what I am feeling, but as with all good art it is what it is.
